October 15th sees some of the finest horses in Europe go head-to-head for a total prize-money pot of £3 million pounds at Ascot.

The two big prizes of the Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes wait until later in the card and have a pool of £2.3 million attached to them. But before those two big events, there are three other top class events, the Sprint Stakes over 6F, the Fillies and Mares’ Stakes (1M 4F) and the Long Distance Cup  over 2M. People who bet on racing should bear this in mind.

The last of those trio of “supporting” events would seem to provide an excellent opportunity to reward the consistency and durability of Opinion Poll who has been in the first four in 19 of his 21 races. Arguably his best performance came at Ascot where he chased home Fame And Glory in the Gold Cup, the pair of them leaving 13 of the best stayers in their wake.

The Fillies and Mares’ race could well provide us with a top-class clash between two of the best fillies seen out this year and the winners of the two fillies Classics this year – Blue Bunting (1000 Guineas) and Dancing Rain (Oaks).

The Sprint Stakes looks to be one of the most competitive on the card, with Bated Breath and Dream Ahead likely to cross swords again and although Dream Ahead is in front on points Bated Breath deserves another crack at him. If you also throw Deacon Blues, Genki, Hoof It and Medicean Man into the mix then you can see how competitive and challenging this race is. Fans of racing betting need to remember this.

After those “starters” the two main courses are the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Champion Stakes. The former of those will see the return of the season’s superstar – Frankel as he bids to remain unbeaten and once again show the sheer power and acceleration that has destroyed all of his rivals this season.Coming two weeks after the Arc  it will be interesting to see the composition of the field for the Champion Stakes but the prize money £1.3M should tempt quite a few top class animals to have a go amongst them Nathaniel, Twice Over and possibly the Queen’s Carlton House who it must be remembered started favourite for the Derby.QIPCO Champions Day – a date to put in your diary.
