Aidan O’Brien’s ex-Australian champion So You Think has been priced up as 7/4 ante-post favourite to add the Champion Stakes at Newmarket in October to the Irish Champion Stakes he landed in terrific style at Leopardstown earlier this month when getting the better of a tremendous tussle with the gutsy Snow Fairy, writes Elliot Slater.
With final plans yet to be announced for most of the principal contenders, the ante-post market for the Group 1 ten-furlong contest has something of a ‘notional’ look about it, but it is great to see so many high-class performers potentially set to clash in what could develop into one of the best races of the 2011 Flat season.
The Ballydoyle colt is still a possible for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and connections are also mulling the option of dropping back to a mile to take on Frankel in the QEII Stakes at Ascot on September 24, but many people feel that the Champion Stakes, over what appears to be his optimum trip, is the most likely next port of call for the son of High Chaparral. Those looking for Betfair horse tips need to bear this in mind.
King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Nathaniel is 7/2 second favourite in the horse racing betting, but his main objective is almost certainly the Arc and he would be unlikely to run again so soon after one of the most gruelling events on the international racing calendar. If however he were to miss the French race, then the HQ showpiece event would be a fine substitute outing.
With Twice Over (7/1) going for a third successive win in the race and his Sir Henry Cecil -trained stable companion Midday (7/1) also a possible runner, together with in-form French 10f specialist Cirrus des Aigles (7/1), Snow Fairy (12/1), and the likes of smart performers French Navy, Misty For Me, Seville, and Banimpire all priced at 16/1 and above, the race looks sure to live up to its reputation as one of the best of the season.
