Uttoxeter host one of their biggest races of the year on Saturday in the Betfred Midlands Grand National.
The 4m1f contest is one of the longest races on the calendar and is a real test of stamina and jumping around the Midlands track. It was won last year by Master Overseer who is back to looking to retain his crown this time around, a feat which no horse has ever done in the history of the race.
David Pipe will be hoping to make up for what has been a disappointing Cheltenham Festival with Master Overseer as he aims to win the race for the third year on the spin. Although he was pulled up in the Welsh National at Chepstow, he made up for that by winning on his next outing at Wincanton back in January.
This year’s field also includes the Welsh Grand National winner Monbeg Dude. He was though disappointing at Haydock on his latest run when finishing 19 lengths behind Well Refreshed but he has been rested since then.
Former Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers will have to carry top weight of 11-12. He came back to form recently with a win at Ffos Lass at odds of 6/1.
Chac Du Cadran has not been seen since winning the North Yorkshire Grand National at Carrick in January. He came home eight lengths ahead of the field that day which was headed by Desperate Dex. The seven-year old has been rested for this weekend’s race and will have Tom Messenger in the saddle once again.
The horse right at the bottom of the weights is Rebecca Choice who is on a hat-trick after wins at Uttoxeter and Warwick respectively. He has though never won at a trip beyond 3m5f.
