David Pipe has revealed that Grands Crus will miss the 2013 Cheltenham Festival following an unsatisfactory scope.
The trainer and connections were not totally happy following the routine test and after discussions, have decided to miss the showpiece meeting of the National Hunt season.
Grands Crus had held entries in two races at the Cheltenham Festival – Thursday’s Ryanair Chase (Cue Card 3/1 fav antepost betting over at betting.betfair.com) and the World Hurdle later on the same day.
The eight-year-old looked to be over his previous fitness concerns when finishing third in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, but was pulled up again at Cheltenham in January’s Argento Chase.
He did look to be back on track following a decent spin at Exeter earlier this week, but Pipe says he “wasn’t 100 per cent” after recieving the scope results.
Speaking to At The Races, the trainer added: “All options are still open but he won’t go to Cheltenham. He’s basically OK but you want to be 110 per cent.”
There’s plenty more left this season and the worse scenario is he doesn’t run again this season.”
Pipe says the next target is Aintree but that they will “see how he goes between now and then”.
